Chief electoral officer fears new bill will discourage voters

OTTAWA – The proposed Fair Elections Act could discourage Canadians from casting ballots on election day, the chief electoral officer testified Thursday.

Mayrand argues eliminating vouching would discourage voting by citizens for whom using the practice is “the last safety net” – those without the necessary documents to prove residency, like students, seniors and First Nations.

The bill also proposes to drastically reduce the subject matter which the chief electoral officer is allowed to communicate to the public.
